Singular Possessives

Understanding Singular Possessives

To make a singular possessive, you add an apostrophe and 's' ('s) to a singular noun. This shows that the noun owns or is really connected to something else.

Examples of Singular Possives

  • Using someone's name: Sarah's book means the book belongs to Sarah.
  • For a single thing: Dog's leash shows the leash belongs to the dog.
  • With special names: Texas's laws are the laws of Texas.
  • Even with unusual nouns: Children's toys (Even though 'children' is not a usual singular noun, it's used like one here for possessive.)

Role in Conversation

  • When talking about what people have: John's car is new. 🚗
  • In family stuff: My mother's recipe is the best. 🍲
  • In business: The company's policy is really important. 🏢
  • About places or groups: The school's entrance is over there. 🏫
